Can someone who does bad things still be considered a good person? "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." (Philosopher Aristotle). It is believed that someone who does bad things cannot be considered a good person. But, this is not entirely true. It is indeed possible for someone who does bad things to still be considered a good person depending on the intentions behind their actions, and not making it a habit. People who do bad things could have had difficult or traumatic experiences that have shaped their behavior. Second, people can recognize their mistakes and work towards becoming a better person. According to Scout in "To kill a Mockingbird", "Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them." (Lee 279). In this quote, Scout is truly understanding her fathers advice that in order to understand someone, you must put yourself in their situation and see things from their perspective, as she thinks about Boo Radley. This is important because Boo Radley was misunderstood and feared by the other kids in the neighborhood. He had a troubled past that contributed to the fear and misunderstanding surrounding him. He had been involved in criminal activity at a younger age, which resulted in his father keeping him locked up in their house for many years. The isolation intensified the rumors and myths about him. But as Scout got to know him, she learned to see him as a kind and caring person, rather than who he was once thought to be. So, learning from Boo Radleys character in the story, it is proven that people can have difficult pasts that affected them, but it still does not define who you truly are as a
