“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth the evil things” (KJV, Matt. 12:35). What makes a good man? A good man is one who follows Christ in every way that he can. Is he perfect? No; the Bible states, “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (KJV, Eccles. 7:20). Therefore, any good man will sin at some point. A good man will ask God for mercy, however. John Proctor did have an affair with Abigail Williams, which is committing adultery and that is disobeying God’s Seventh Commandment. Abigail comes to John asking him to continue where they had left off with their affair but John refused. She offered to him to come to Barbados with her but he turned her down then, also. He told her in the movie, The Crucible, that he would not dare do unto his wife again what he once did to her. He knew that he could get out of being hung if he would admit to witchcraft, but he would not do so because it would be a lie and to lie is to sin. However, to save his wife, he decides that he has no choice. Judge Danforth and a few others come to John and asked him if he had seen numerous people with the devil and John would not say yes to any. He says that he is guilty of witchcraft and they ask him to sign a paper stating so and they would nail it to the church door. John signed the paper but regretted it immediately afterwards. He begged for them to not nail it to the church door but they said that they must and they asked him why he would confess verbally but did not want his name hanging on the doors of the church. To this, John Proctor says, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”

John Proctor is quite blunt and frank towards everyone, which are normally not always the best qualities to have. He calls them as he sees them. Constantly, John Proctor refers to Abigail Williams as a whore. He knew that Mary Warren had never seen the devil and called her out on it, but for only just reasons. John Proctor wanted what was best for him and his family, as well as the rest
