In Salem years ago an innocent man by the name of John Proctor was hung. He was accused of witchcraft, the American playwright Arthur Miller distinguished him as a man powerful of body, even tempered and not easily led. John Proctor is good, because he loves his family, understands the truth, and repents to his sin and shows loyalty to his wife. Proctor didn’t attend church regularly like he should have been. I assume he spent more time with his family than anyone else since he wasn’t involved with the church. Reverend Hale questioned him and asked why his third son wasn’t baptized. John replied "I like it not that Mister Parris should lay his hand upon my baby. I see no light of God in that man I'll not conceal it." he is showing that he cares for his child by not letting Parris touch him . Parris lectures about "Hellfire and bloody damnation" and Proctor refuses to take his family to that church where they could leave terrified from hearing Parris. Also Proctor tries to help Hale about the girls during the trial at the court. Showing that he is a good man and expressing what he feels to Hale. Proctor says to him, "And why not, if they must hang for denyin' it? He had an affair with Abigail who was once him and his wife's servant. She wants Proctor to be her husband and would do anything to be with him, like getting his wife killed. Abigail in Act one goes up to him and tries to grasp his attention, but he cuts her off and says " I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut my hand off before I'll ever reach for you again.". Proctor really means that he wants nothing to do with her and is willing to cut his hand off before having an affair on his wife with Abigail ever
