Proctor’s Opposition to His Society In the book, The Crucible, Arthur Miller introduces us to John Proctor. Proctor is married and simple, yet he's argumentative toward his town for the persecution of “witches.” Proctor faces conflict throughout the town, his morals are challenged and his view on ethical implication are changing.
1. John Proctor is a tall man. He has long brown hair and a short beard and mustache. He has a bold personality and cares about his family. He stands up for what he believes in no matter what the cost.
John Proctor was an Innocent,Good, and Hard-Working man. INNOCENT John Proctor wanted to keep his good name clear to everyone in Salem, Massachusetts so no one won’t treat him so badly. He wanted to talk to the court about if he confesses that he was a witch he will be set free, but the people will be mean to him or he will have to be executed by being hanged by the neck until dead. He chose to be executed so his name can be still good and he also did the right thing by being executed. John says”There will be no love for Satan in this house” and it means that he doesn’t want the devil to enter his home and cause trouble to everyone he knows.
The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, has given us a proposal about a man named, John Proctor. John Proctor was a good man, until his wife Goody Proctor was falsely accused of witchcraft, and things for dear old John went downhill. When John was summoned to court to try and defend his wife, a girl named Abigail Williams, stepped in and stopped him from completing his goal, but screaming and saying another girl named Mary Warren, was sending out her spirit, which she denied in doing so. All of the girls ran and tried to hide from the “spirits”. Even though there were none, after it was all done Mary turned the blame onto John Proctor, and he said, “God is Dead”, which shocked the town and the court, which landed him in jail, with charges
In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
In The Crucible, John Proctor the protagonist, becomes a victim of the witch trials when his wife Elizabeth, is accused of witchcraft. In order to free his wife, Proctor must convince Judge Danforth of his wife’s innocence. Judge Danforth does not sign condemnations lightly and takes meticulous inspection of his cases to determine the guilty party. He is also a highly religious man who takes matters between God and men seriously. It is because of Danforth’s dedication to the law and God that Proctor utilizes ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade him.
After the trials were finished they immediately started hanging the list of people that were convicted of the crimes. John Proctor being one of those people, was not yet hanging but he was being held captive. Abigail visits him and tries to apologies and get him to run off with her. He turns her down and says he would rather go to hell then run off with her. Abigail apologies and tells him
The Crucible by Arthur Miller focused on a very dark time in our nation’s history: The Salem Witch Trials. In the midst of this frenzy, many people were accused and killed. In the the play, three very well respected people, Giles Corey, Rebecca Nurse, and John Proctor, were all executed; however, their deaths were necessary.
The best character (The crucible) John proctor was the most admirable character in the play because he sacrifices himself for his for his children, also he was a good husband and because he was much known in the town he had a lot of problems and also a lot of things to do like, takes care of his children and a ranch that he has. In act 4 the author wrote “Because I lie and sign myself to lie! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” (page1232) Act4. That John mean in this seen is that he was regretful about lying, and because, of him a lot of people was hang he apprehend that lying is not good and he needed to pay for his act .
John Proctor is a very dishonest person and isn't afraid to argue with others about things even if heś completely in the wrong. The crucible by Arthur Miller really does a good job of showing proctors true colors in the play. Many of the things Proctor does is cheat on his wife multiple times with a girl that's half his age and then cuts the girl ̈Abigail ̈ off. He says that he is a very faithful man but that wouldn't make sense because he cheated on his wife and when reverend hale asked him to list all ten commandments he could only list nine and the one he forgot his wife repeated for him and it was the commandment that one shall not be an adulterer which goes against the bible. He also made it very clear that he didn't believe in witches
Throughout Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, the characters are constantly faced with many compelling influences. The protagonist in The Crucible, John Proctor, is faced with the conflicting decision of pleading guilty along with countless others in being a witch or being hung as a guilt-free Christian. The thirteen people, of whom before Proctor had been accused as a witch, had began to accept the penalty of not saying they are a witch. Because of their decision to not be persuaded by the accusing children, these people strongly persuaded Proctor to accompanying the others of his community. But with the strong persuasion to stay silent, many of the accused people were being prompted into pleading guilty and being allowed to stay alive.
John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.
In the Crucible, many of the characters go through changes because of the intensity of the situation. But there is only one character that I think changed the most, and that is John Proctor who is the protagonist of the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I think that John Procotor changes the most in the Crucible because he is in every act and mostly in every scene, and throughtout the play I see more drama (Dynamic Character) in him than any other character in the Crucible and I will go through and tell you how John Proctor changes in the Crucible. In the beginning of the play (Acts 1 and 2), we focus on John Proctor and we know that he is a good puritan citizen, a hard-working farmer and who is a husband and father.
These changes take him from lustful and deceiving to loving and loyal. In The Crucible Arthur Miller paints John Proctor to be a lecherous man. In act one Proctor and Abigail are speaking somewhat hastily when proctor says,"Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again"(Miller 23).
