Greed and jealousy live inside everyone, but one must refrain from these thoughts to prevent self destruction. In William Shakespeare's Elizabethan era Tragedy Macbeth, Shakespeare uses betrayal as a vehicle for obtaining power for selfish means, and illustrates the grave costs of betrayal to the individual. Greed often fuels an uncontrolled lust for power. Shakespeare reveals the extent of Macbeth’s greed when Macbeth's first thought regarding the witches prophecy stir thoughts of murder: “ My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical”(I.iii.152). Most individuals do not think one should murder someone to obtain what you desire.
Although, the most common occurrence throughout the play is how Shakespeare uses the character of Macbeth to illustrate how betrayal and deception will come back to get you in the future. Macbeth's betrayal to King Duncan ultimately led to the downfall of his evil actions, and finally his death. By Macbeth carrying out the assassination of King Duncan and his guards he betrayed not only his whole life of accomplishments but most of all, Duncans loyalty to Macbeth as a man. In the play Macbeth there are many important themes, betrayal being one of them. The most important theme is betrayal. Betrayal is the biggest theme because it occurs many times throughout the play. If betrayal wasn’t in the play then many of the big events would never happen and there would be a different outcome. The three best examples of betrayal are the Thane of Cawdor betraying the king, Macbeth betraying the king, and Macbeth betraying Banquo.
Betrayal is a cannon event a lot of people go through, the closest people could be the best liars. The Tragedy Of Mcbeth tells of how a little power can change someones colors and hurt the people around them. You never know who can change, it’s the least expected. Example: In The Tragedy Of Mcbeth the main character Mcbeth fell for these witches proficeys but didn’t listen closely and betrayed his king and his best friends.
King is the highest honor someone could have during this time, with that comes respect and loyalty. The king is highly venerated and held at almost a holy standard. One would expect that someone who loves their country would also love their king. Often times the reason for someone not liking their king is the way they rule. Speaking in terms of the play Macbeth, Duncan-the king of Scotland- rules justly and fairly, but he still has plenty of traitors within his group of trusted men.
In Macbeth, while contemplating whether or not he should kill Duncan, Macbeth says. “I have no spur / To prick the sides of my intent, but only / Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself / And falls on the other”(i.vii.25-28). Macbeth is saying that he has ambition to kill Duncan, but there is no good reason to except for him to gain power. At this point, Macbeth has little power, only ruling his own homeland, so when he does kill Duncan later in the story, he is able to keep his morals intact. He is doing something that, in his mind, he needs to do.
Macbeth shows how easily people can be influenced by others that are close to them, and not always in a good way. Macbeth tells his wife, “We will proceed no further in this business. He hath honored me of late, and I have bought golden opinions from all sorts of people,” (1.7.31-33). In the beginning of the play, Macbeth showed his kindness towards the king and he was not selfish.
Analyse how a relationship was used to explore the idea of loyalty, and conversely, betrayal. Loyalty is a fundamental virtue as it holds the structure of society through establishing trust between individuals. To be loyal to someone is to show them the utmost devotion, and the cost of breaking this trust, betrayal, irrevocably damages both parties involved. William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, explores the themes of loyalty and betrayal by showing the decline of a man so consumed by ambition that he goes to extreme lengths to achieve his goal, betraying himself and those close to him, only to lose sight of himself and his values before the end. An example of it in act evonne is when king Duncan says “No more that thane of cawdor shall deceive” (act I,III,71) he says this because the thane of cawdor betrayed him and was giving away all of his plans during the battle with Norway. After Macbeth hears his prophecy he decides to take further action which is to kill the king he says “It were done quickly if the assassination Could trammel up the consequence, and catch” he was basically saying that if he kills the king and get caught there would be serious consequences.
Macbeth’s ambitions influence him to attain his desire for power. This ambition drives him to become reckless for the sake of reaching his goals. This recklessness leads to the murder of Duncan- the first in a line of murders Macbeth commits to reach his power. These murders represent Macbeth’s gradual loss of morality.
Macbeth’s ambition is what is causing him to intervene with his prophecy and pursue his goal (rather than leave it to chance). In a way, it is Macbeth’s own “black and deep desires” that make him kill in the first place as the witches never tell him to do so. Furthermore, apart from ambition, it is Macbeth’s own weak will and moral system that causes him to do the actions that result in his downfall. Macbeth’s weak will is undeniable and is illustrated before killing Duncan. “I have of spur/To prick the sides of my intent, but only/Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself/And falls on the other” (I, VII, 25-28).
