Max Lavrentyev English-09 Miss Chang 12, April 2016 Rough Draft Prejudice and bias Prejudice and Bias are harsh obstacles in the world that separate us, a problem that prevents us from being able to be together. In To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, this conflict impacts Maycomb's whole society, and once they're made it is hard to break. Prejudice and Bias come from Judgement, Racism, and Fear. It is overcome by getting to know someone better, looking at what is in the inside, and doing what is right even if society is against it. Judgement is one of the key reasons of prejudice and bias. It separates the peace amongst close ones. Scouts cousin Francis says he learns from his grandmother. “Grandma says it's bad enough he lets you al run wild, but now he's turned out a Nigger lover we'll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again."( 83) It’s excessively appalling that Atticus and his own blood relative have ambivalence concerning blacks. Clearly Francis’s grandmother is more concerned about doing what is supposedly right according to Maycomb’s laws, rather then do what is truly right. Anyways, Francis's grandmother shows her arrogance by mentioning that it will ruin her reputation. Racism is also found when Aunt Alexandra is not fond of Calpurnia. “ Atticus, it's alright to be soft hearted, you're and easy man, but you have daughter to think of. A daughter who's growing up." ( 136-137) Aunt Alexandra is way that she wants Scout to be “ dignified” by getting rid of Calpurnia because hanging out with blacks is a disgrace to Maycomb. Aunt Alexandra also thinks it is civilized to despise blacks and show no respect, because that is the way most people view the American culture during that time.
