The game played by the children Scout, Jem, and Dill in the book To Kill a Mockingbird emphasizes their ignorance and prejudice towards things they don’t understand. Such as when they talk about Boo Radley being dead, “Besides, I don’t think he’s still there. He died years ago and they stuffed him up the chimney.” This dismissal of the possibility that they might feel shame for their actions reflects the theme of ignorance to a tee. The apparent incapability to feel shame is apparent in them when they continue the game in front of all the neighbors, save Nathan Radley.

Harper Lee truly understood the power that kindheartedness can have on a person. Harper Lee wrote this book during marches regarding the civil rights movement for racial equality between black people and white people in the United States.
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee teaches us about the town of Maycomb County in the late 1930s, where characters live in isolation and victimization. Through the perspective of a young Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, readers will experience prejudice Maycomb brings during times where people face judgement through age, gender, skin, and class. Different types of prejudice are present throughout the story and they all contribute to how events play out in the small town. Many of those in Maycomb face and express sexism, racial discrimination, and classism their whole lives. This disables the people who fall victim from living their life comfortably in peace.

This chapter helps us explore right and wrong. It also helps us to understand and have empathy for people. Chapter 11 is a crucial part of the book where these themes become more apparent. Lee skillfully portrays their presence both on the surface and in the larger perspective.
Throughout Harper Lee’s fantastic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, many characters show compassion towards Arthur Radley, but most do not. Set in the 1930s, the drastic social hierarchy is at its peak. Racism, inequality, and superstition occur throughout the book, but a select few begin to look past these simple minded thoughts. Compassion is not only the sympathy for others, but a care; perhaps a form of love. Scout, a young girl who has yet to experience the classes of society, and the ways of life in Maycomb, is one fine example of compassion in this piece of literature.
Atticus knows there will be a lot criticism from people all around the town of Maycomb; a heavily white populated area. Nevertheless, Atticus does not care and tries everything he can possibly do, to save Tom Robinson’s life. Thus shows, that not all people of white color are prejudice and racist, because there are beings like Atticus who have chosen to fight against the crowd and bring society an inch closer towards equality. Throughout the story, not only does Atticus have to suffer from hateful people around the town, but his two children also have to deal with boat loads of mischief, that comes with having a white father as lawyer, that is defending a
Atticus is a perfect example of tolerance in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. During his interactions with others, he consistently demonstrates his willingness to listen to differing perspectives and beliefs, without ever passing judgment based on race or background. This can be proved by three examples within the novel. The first example is that Atticus kept his ground and he didn’t make any threats when the mob came for Tom Robinson he even kept his ground when his kids showed up.
Cultural norms are what make and shape a society. They are the guidelines, and or patterns, that are to be followed, in order to be considered a normal, typical, everyday citizen. As such, it does not matter if the norms are right or wrong. As long as the citizen is still a part of their society, right and wrong does not matter, as far as they are concerned. In the case of To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the cultural norm, of Maycomb County, embraces the wrong, in the form of extreme prejudice behavior.
As the book goes on and the characters change, ethical dilemmas about fear, and racism are seen. Additionally, what the book has to say about moral values and how things are done is mentioned in this essay. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee depicts the crude reality of Ethical Dilemmas in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1950s. One of the first Ethical Dilemmas presented in the book is what are the morals of the people in Maycomb. It is clear that Maycomb has differences in how people act, but that is different on what their moral values are.
What if the world was still the same as it was back during the great depression. What if this was the truth. In To Kill a Mockingbird readers can see how prejudice affected people of color back then, and how it’s not so different from today. In the novel readers will find unfairness in court, hate crimes, and segregation. Today readers can still find these same issues, but in different forms.
Atticus fears that "There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins” (Page 224) Atticus confirmed that Maycomb won’t have a just system due to white men’s words to black men. This would only make Maycomb welcoming to white people and unwelcoming for black people. Maycomb is unwelcoming and unjust for the prejudice view for black

Though most of the town Maycomb feels negatively and discriminates the African-Americans, characters like Atticus show us how one person can impact his surroundings if he has high morals. Although he couldn’t change the mindset of the other town residents , he made sure that his own children didn’t discriminate people, purely on the basis of their skin colour. Racism can be seen even in the first few chapters of the book. These racist comments by nonracist children typify the culture in which they were growing up.
