People change. Whether it's a change in appearance, personality, or lifestyle.
Sometimes people change because of an event in their life or sometimes people change and they don't even realize it. Change is a progressive thing and it doesn't happen overnight. For some people it takes a whole unexpected journey that they get dragged along in. Bilbo Baggins was a simple and well mannered hobbit, living in the fantasy land of The Shire. He lived a simple and comfortable life. Until, he was drawn to be the fourteenth man in a life changing quest. In The Hobbit, Tolkien uses dialogue, revealing actions, and inner thinking to show how Bilbo’s mentality and courage progresses as he takes on his epic quest.

Throughout the novel Bilbo engages in conversation and dialogue with most characters, specifically Gandalf. We see at the start of his quest Bilbo complains quite often, and continuously longs for the comfort and safety of his home. When Gandalf and the gang of dwarves first come around and first offer the adventure, Bilbo is obviously one to refuse very quickly. As he told Gandalf, “Sorry! I don't want any adventures, thank you. Not today.” As figured, Bilbo wounds up going on the adventure, but after Gandalf had to assure the dwarves hat he was indeed the right choice for the fourteenth member of the band. As previously stated, in the beginning of the story Bilbo was very cautious and risk-averse. In the middle of his adventure is when we see his courage and his mindset about the whole quest start to shine. There are multiple parts where Bilbo becomes courageous, some parts less memorable than others. “Then Bilbo plucked up the courage and put his little hand in Williams enormous pocket.” Though some may not think that this was a leap of courage for Bilbo, they forget that before this, Bilbo had not really completed anything yet that shows that he was being a courageous
