Paul Thompson in the article “Startling Finds on Teenage Brains” , claims that 14 year old Brazil, charged in last May’s shooting of middle school teacher Gunrow, was found guilty of second degree murder. Paul Thompson supports his by first explaining that Brazil was only 12 when the incident happen. He then says since he was only 12 , his brain was and still is not fully developed. Lastly the author says ,” teenagers are not yet adults , and the legal system shouldn’t treat them as such. Thompson’s purpose is to get the world to know , if children are not yet adults, why are they being treated like one in the legal system in order to stop it.

Although there may not be a direct answer to how the human brain evolved, there exists theories and suggestions, such as Gavin de Beer’s suggestion on evolution, that could be explanations as to how this came to be. Beer says that it is the “lengthened infancy” that is credited to boosting evolution in the human brain, that has caused us to lose our “ hairy covering, our jaws and teeth were reduced in size, our sex life was postponed”. Therefore, it explains the path our body’s took in evolution, creating a feeling of awe and amazement because of the ability of our bodies to evolve in such a way, leading our brains to develop in such a way. Eiseley also creates a suspenseful feeling in his audience when he states “ Some neurologists…. Suggest that here may lie other potentialities which only the future of the race may reveal.”
Imagine going to school and really succeeding; you understand everything, you’re getting good grades and all the praise you can dream of from your parents and teachers. But then you move up and things get harder, you don’t understand everything, your grades are dropping and you are scared that you will no longer get that praise. Google made me stupid because I googled all the test answers and failed my test. Nicholas Carr, an American author, wrote “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” published in 2008 in The Atlantic, and he argues about the effects of the Internet on literacy, cognition, and culture. Carr starts his argument by taking an ending scene from a movie called A Space Odyssey. Carr uses logos throughout the whole essay, but also gives himself credibility by giving evidence that he knows what is going on in his mind. I feel that this argument is effective.

The second article says that this process is necessary as it allows the brain to become more specialized so one is better at the skills one uses. This shows the helpfulness of pruning as it increases the development of frequently used skills. The article also says that the abilities one has as a newborn are pruned away so they can no longer be accessed.
I would like to state that before I make my stance on the question that I will be addressing in my essay as a response to Andy Clark and David Chalmers’ “The Extended Mind”, that I am simply expressing my own personal and conceptual opinions on whether the authors provide persuasive grounds to believe that our mental states and processes can extend beyond our brain and body into the technological environment, in which case my answer is yes, I think they do.
