In the movie ‘In time’ directed by Andrew Niccol, Niccol aims to to show and represent the instincts and flaws of human nature. The main character Will Salas, loses his mother to the system his society runs on. The system is made up of the death of poor people so that the wealthy can live forever. During the scene of Will and Sylvia Running to the next time zone and Leon chasing them, Niccol’s aim is shown through the use of camera angles such as- tracking, wide and mid shot etc. Gestures and facial expressions, lighting and colour, Music and sound. These four techniques help emphasis Niccol’s aim and also shows the influence that being superior has on people. In this running scene, Niccol uses the techniques of camera angles with lighting and colour together. In this part of the scene a tracking shot is used to run alongside Will, this tracking shot has been used before, when Will was running to work, to earn time, he is also now running to get time to live. The tracking is used together with high-key, bright lighting to show that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and the light at the end is time in Leons car. The high-key bright lighting with the tracking shot also gives Will a bold, dark shadow behind him as he runs and bright gold light in front of him as he runs to the car, this could mean that Will is leaving his previous lifestyle behind him and pursuing a new life. Niccol uses this scene to represent the true human nature of Will and to reflect what human nature looks like while also showing us the flaws. He uses this scene to bring out the true human nature
