Not a Care in the World Careless people, only concerned with themselves and their own little world, blind to the world around them and the results of their actions, the reason for the downfall of society. The most careless people of all are Daisy and Tom Buchanan, a couple of the main characters for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Daisy and Tom are a rich couple who are carless to how their actions affect those around them. They do not think or plan ahead to how their actions may result, they just do, no thoughts and no care, then hide behind their money, not dealing with the consequences of their actions. Through these two characters, the theme of carelessness is constant, a never ending cycle of mistakes and ruin. Tom’s first fault was bringing Daisy’s cousin Nick to a small “gathering” with his mistress and friends. Tom is careless with hiding his affair, instead just leaving it out in the open for everyone to witness. Even though Tom seems to love Daisy, his heart was also with his mistress Myrtle and when she is killed in a hit and run, Tom is outraged when he believes the driver to be Gatsby. Tom is quick to action instead of thinking things through and getting more evidence, not caring for the details and only believing what he wants. Killing Gatsby is Tom’s ultimate fault, not caring that maybe Gatsby was not the true murderer and that he was an innocent man. But just like his wife, Tom is careless and does not care for the consequences of his actions. After Tom kills Gatsby, he and his wife flee from New York, leaving with only their money and their
