Dead Poets Society, a great cinematic production directed by the esteemed Peter Weir. Carpe Diem, or seize the day, is the theme of DPS. To seize the day means to make the most of the current time and think little about the future results. This concept is both negative and positive, because of the fact that incarceration is possible for some actions, as well as ruining chances in the future. On the positive side, rewards may be received by taking chances, such as getting a new job, and winning money from gambling.
A positive example of carpe diem is Neil Perry, he followed what he wanted to do and what made him happy. In the end Neil seized the day, but in the end his overbearing father caused him to commit suicide. Another positive aspect of carpe diem as seen in Dead Poets Society is when Knox Overstreet kept taking chances with Chris Noel and eventually he was able to convince her to watch a play and I have a theory that they got married one day. Mr. Keating also demonstrates carpe diem in a positive way throughout the movie. His lover was in England but he was so passionate about teaching he went to teach at the school he graduated at. Carpe diem is a perfect example of this philosophy. Knox Overstreet demonstrated many negative aspects of carpe diem throughout the movie. He was in love with Chris Noel, and Chris invited him to a party, where Knox got very drunk and was looking for a place to sit down. Then he sees Chris asleep and kisses her on the forehead, her boyfriends friends see him do that so Chris’ boyfriend beats Knox up. Charlie Dalton or “Nuwanda” is another example of a negative aspect of carpe diem. He wrote an article in his schools newspaper, which was against the schools viewpoint. It ended up with the members of the DPS having to disband and ultimately getting Mr. Keating fired. Therefore, carpe diem is a largely negative
