In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury’s primary goal is to portray censorship. He tries to elicit the feeling that the government is controlling the people’s thoughts, what they see, and even what they do. If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; Better yet, give him none”(Bradbury, 58). He explains to Montag on page 59, “The important thing for you to remember, Montag, is we’re the Happiness Boys, the Dixie Duo, you and I and the others. We stand against the small tide of those who want to make everyone unhappy with conflicting theory and thought.” Beatty tells Montag if everyone has different ideas or “conflicting theory and thought” then no one will be happy, or it will just make everyone unhappy because then people will fight, and feel bad. Beatty explains that it is better for society if everyone just doesn’t have their own opinions and that they should just go on with life with the same amount of knowledge as everyone else, which is controlled by the government.
