Character development is a very important literary element for novels, short stories, and novellas. Character development is the process in which an author creates a character’s background, physical appearance, and personality. It may also include the way the character thinks and acts, the character’s relationships in the story, and even the history of the character, or what that character has been through. In the story A Problem, character development is seen in the characters throughout the story. It can be seen in Sasha and his uncle. In the story, Sasha, the main character, is a great example of character development. In him, the author used character development in the way he communicated, his history, his relationships, his defects, and his thoughts and actions. With Sasha he uses both. By using direct characterization, he describes Sasha’s background, or history. But, the author also uses indirect characterization in his thoughts and actions. However, with the Colonel, the author uses indirect characterization. For example, just by the way the character is called by, Colonel, which is a military position, the author says that he is a very strong character who will always follow the law and do what is right, no matter the painful outcomes it may bring or to whom it may bring them to. In conclusion, character development is seen greatly in this short story. It can be seen not just with the protagonist, but also with one of his uncles, the Colonel. To do this, the author used many elements, like for example, Sasha’s relationships with his uncles, his thoughts and actions, and even his history. The author also uses major direct and indirect characterization as mentioned. This helped the story have a better plot and it kept the reader more
