Trying to get back home Odyssues had to travel for 20 years going on adventures to get pushed back constantly. Odysseus is a hero because he shows Strength, Intelligence and patience while dealing with difficult situations.
The external and internal conflict found in the section of the Odyssey, Scylla and Charybdis are abundant there are external conflicts of Odysseus standing in face of death, or deciding to keep his crew going and being level heading even in the face of immense danger. An example of this external conflict was shown to us by him standing on the ship’s deck with two heavy spears and facing the great sea monsters, ”so I tie on my cuirass and took up two heavy spears, then made my way along the foredeck - thinking to see her first from there, the monster of the gray rock”(Homer, 196). The Odyssey is one of the most famous pieces of writing to this very day. Most have either heard of or have read this work within their high school or college years. This writing is what is called today an epic poem. An epic poem is a long narrative that normally entails the journey or struggles of an ancient hero. In The Odyssey the hero is Odysseus, and his adventures of being held captive and his escape back to his home are detailed in this narrative.
When Odysseus and his men stumble upon his cave, he traps them and tries to eat them. His greed for food and resources leads him to act in a brutal and inhumane way, ignoring the rules of hospitality and common decency. Polyphemus' actions highlight how greed can make people lose sight of their humanity and cause them to act in ways that are cruel and destructive. In contrast, we also see characters who resist the temptation of greed and show self-restraint.
This caused him and his crew to be pulled on countless adventures ultimately leading for the demise of his ship and crew. Only through strategy, strength, and smarts was he able to make it back to Ithaca and reclaim his kingdom.
