Conformity creates many new problems. The concept of conformity is based on one person's actions and how it is influenced by a group's behavior. One person's morals and beliefs change due to the opinion of others. They want to have the approval and acceptance of others in that group, they want to fit in. In the text, "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. there are many examples of how conformity in society creates an issue. This problem becomes amplified when put in a dystopian setting that was meant to be utopian world because everyone wanted a perfect world but now it is an undesirable place. Repeatedly throughout the text, George says, "good as anyone else'' (2). That isn't George speaking; it's the government that manipulated him into thinking that. They stripped him of his individuality, which defined him. Conformity caused George to change his beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes due to others and the consequences. Conformity is a big problem because it doesn't allow people to make their own decisions. It also causes people who are not the norm, not equal, to feel uncomfortable, and they will want to completely change themselves because of society's acceptance. Conformity leads to society becoming undiversified. Not only in dystopian settings does conformity create problems, but it is also a massive problem in the real world. Free thinking is a privilege we have. We don't have to agree with everything the government says or do something just because it is expected. The Holocaust was started by Hitler proposing an idea. Some agreed, and others disagreed. Once the group became so big, his idea became society's norm, and conformity was created. The conformity caused some people who did disagree to change their beliefs to be socially accepted. Individuality was not accepted and was looked down
