Montag’s courage is most evident through his actions of killing Beatty and becoming a criminal for his cause. He recalls his murder with ambivalence: “There’s Beatty dead, and he was my friend once” (Bradbury 124). Heller states that Montag chose “to kill Beatty rather than betray Faber” (1). Despite conflicting emotions, Montag finally decides that Beatty is an obstacle in his way that needs to be eliminated. These desperate actions show that Montag has the courage to do anything for his cause, even if that means killing his old boss.

He would never have questioned his lifestyle if he had not been so impressionable. Clarisse forced him to reflect on his life, making him realize that he was miserable. The suicidal woman and her willingness to die for her novels showed him that books contain important information. Without Faber’s guidance and persuasion, Montag would not have considered hiding books in other firemen’s houses or joining the Harvard graduates on their journey. The influence that these three people had on Montag caused his dynamic change and instilled a curiosity in him that caused him to take action. Montag’s curiosity is shown by the questions he asks Beatty, the theft of the old woman’s book, and the effort he gave to contact Faber. This curiosity motivates Montag throughout the story to pursue his goal and find a purpose through books and their information. If the protagonist had not had a naturally curious personality, he would never have become intrigued with books. He would have never questioned the purpose of firemen, and would have accepted whatever Beatty told him. Montag would also have never stolen the book from the old woman, and would never have had a reason to contact Faber. Montag’s inquisitiveness led him to Faber, and therefore opened his eyes to an opportunity to change his life and rebel. Lastly, Montag is unique because of his unwavering courage.
