Courage is a virtue that all people have and it can come from the most unlikely places. Being a woman or child in an environment where war is being waged, and to be able to manage in that environment, took an incredible amount of courage. Faulkner uses several situations in his novel “The Unvanquished,” to show how Granny, Bayard, and Ringo must possess the courage to take on roles that they normally would not have if the man-of-the-house would have been on the home-front, instead of fighting Yankees. Every son wants to be like his father. They look up to him, live by his example, and want to win his approval in every situation; or at least that is what it was like back then. With the help of Bayard’s uncle, He and Ringo begin the manhunt of Granny’s murderer, Ab Snopes. This journey takes them through brutish weather, rough terrain, and close encounters with the enemy. With his uncle being shot, Bayard and Ringo are forced to press on, alone, after Snopes. They eventually find, kill, and bring the evidence of it back to their homestead, where they meet up with Bayard’s Father. This is another situation where courage, in the form of a child is needed (Faulkner). As you can see, courage is a quality that is evident is many characters in “The Unvanquished.” This quality is not just important in a famous novel written in the 1930s, but is seen every day in our world today. The soldiers who have fought for our country through all the wars in history have shown a great amount of courage, and their mothers, wives, and children have backed their commitment.
