The Courage in People
What causes one to be courageous? Where do these emotions come from? The emotion is greatly shown in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, about a young girl named Scout, who grows up learning about the world around her and about the reality of life and shows courage in her fellow townsfolk. The world is shown through Scout’s eyes and the world changes in her eyes as she gets older. Scout starts to understand the reality of life and the grievances in it. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the characters Atticus Finch and Arther Radley demonstrate bravery. In the novel a house is caught on fire. The children stand in front of the Radley home for safety. It is stated by Atticus when talking to Scout, “Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know when he put the blanket around you” (72). This instance shows that Arther Radley or Boo Radley does indeed have courage in the novel. Just going outside has to take courage for Arther Radley. He is in such a poor condition that being around anyone would hurt him. This is proof that Atticus shows courage in the novel because he knows by taking this case he could lose everything. This one simple case could destroy everything he has. However instead of quitting he still shows up to the case. Atticus is courageous enough to keep going, to protect Tom even though everything could go horribly wrong. The second example of Atticus’s courage is when Tom Robinson is put in a holding cell. Tom is stuck in a jail cell and in danger. However Mr. Finch is there to protect Tom. In the novel a man stated “[Tom Robinson] in there, Mr. Finch?” (151). Atticus answers “[Tom Robinson] is, and he’s asleep. Don’t wake him up”(151). Then another man whispers “You know what we want” (151). In this interaction Atticus is being threatened by a mob trying to get to Tom Robinson. This shows Atticus is brave because he is standing up to a mob that could very easily kill him. Atticus is putting himself in danger for another person. That is why he is brave. Even though Atticus could have walked away and let the mob kill Tom, Atticus did not. To do something like
