As former U.S president Ronald Regan once said “There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, he presents the theme of courage. The story takes place during the Great Depression in the late 1930’s when racial tension was at a high and they lived with the segregated, divided town called Maycomb. Perspective = Scout (young girl) who’s brother is Jem and father is Atticus; Atticus is a lawyer who defends an African American man who is falsely accused of raping a white woman. Maudie. And scout goes outside to be safe from her own house when she was told she received a blanket from Boo this is said when Scout and Jem state, “Thank who?” I asked.“Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you did not know it when he put the blanket around you” (96). As stated, Boo Radley helped the children during the house fire which requires a large amount of courage for somebody in the position that he is placed in. This shows courage because he is risking being seen and publicized by people for leaving his house, which means risking his well-being for the well-being of others. As scout explains to Heck Tate about the attempted murder she states, "Who was it?” “Why there he is, Mr. Tate, he can tell you his name.” As I said it, I half pointed to the man in the corner, but brought my arm down quickly lest Atticus reprimand me for pointing. It was impolite to point... “Hey, Boo,” I said”. (362) This actively demonstrates that Boo Radley risked being seen, meaning he will be overwelled with attention. Adding on if he got caught by other people committing these acts he would have been sent to jail for a murder. When a lynch mob wants to hurt Atticus for getting in the way of Tom, so Jem stands up for him this is said when Atticus and scout state, “Go home, I said.” Jem shook his head. As Atticus’s fists went to his hips, so did Jem’s, and as they faced each other I could see little resemblance between them” (203). As said Jem did not back down from his father to protect him, showing his courage and loyalty to others. Adding on Jem knew the consequences of his actions, but he knew he had do it to be sure of his father's safety. Scout is running with Jem when she suddenly she gets moved out of danger this is said when Scout states, “Somebody rolled against me and I felt Jem. He was up like lightning and pulled me with him but, though my head and shoulders where free, I was so entangled we didn't get very far” (351). As Scout said Jem tried his best efforts to get his sister out of danger, which caused Jem to get hurt when they got entangled. This act of courage means that he will do what is right even though that act might lead to heavy consequences. To conclude, Jem Finch has helped his father and saved his sister which shows contribution in the novel
