Jonas’s actions in the book “The Giver” written by Lois Lowry provides a lot of examples that makes him a courageous character. He is courageous because he goes against the nature of his community and the set rules that they have to follow. Many great actions that Jonas has shown, have proven he is a courageous character.

Jonas accepted the role of The Giver, which is a role and position with great danger. He knows that when you become The Giver, it involves receiving and bearing the burden of painful memories to protect the community from experiencing them. ‘His shoulders straightened slightly. Briefly he felt a tiny sliver of sureness for the first time.’ ‘But at the same time he was filled with fear’ These two quotes show that even though he had no clue of what he has to become, he still put on a brave face and is already showing courageousness. He starts off by getting positive memories only, but then the current Receiver starts giving him challenging and terrifying memories, as he knows it’s not going to be all rainbows and sunshine. “Overwhelmed by the pain, he lay there in the fearsome stench for hours, listened to the men and animals die, and learned what warfare meant.” This was one of the memories that burdened the current Giver the most. Jonas was so surprised about the different feelings and emotions that the community was raised up to never feel. Can you imagine experiencing all these kinds of emotions for the first time in your life? Jonas was exhausted as the more memories he got, the more pain it caused him.
