The Giver is a curiosity-inducing fiction book by Lois Lowry. It will give you a sense of suspense that makes you want to keep reading to the end. For Jonas, gaining feelings changed his view of his community drastically. He feels more alone and wants to share the privilege with others, but he is forbidden. Gaining feelings opens up a whole new perspective for Jonas. At the beginning of the book, Jonas goes from supporting the community to realizing that there is much more to life that he was unaware of. Over time, he faces challenges and discovers new things about the community he once honored. Jonas begins to change his opinions, not only with the community but also with the people in it. In the story, it explains Jonas’s traits while at the Ceremony of 12. On the page it says, "Intelligence," she said. "We are all aware that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days. "Integrity," she said next. "Jonas has, like all of us, committed minor 4 transgressions." For instance, Jonas states, “You and I don’t need to care about the rest of them.” (156, Lowry)This quote from the book is a prime example of how Jonas’s feelings changed about the community and the people in it. After learning about the sickening secrets through memories and the Giver, he says they no longer need to care about the rest of them. Even if they still care deep down, it was an immensely true change in Jonas’s perspective of the community. In my opinion, it’s bittersweet that he feels this way. I believe it is important for Jonas to realize the poor decisions the community made, and I am glad he stepped forward in trying to make a change.
