Cruelty is a type of behavior that causes physical or mental harm to another individual, whether intentional or not. Maya was raised in Stamps, Arkansas due to her parents separating, and forcing Marguerite(Maya) and her younger brother Bailey to live with their grandmother. The parents not trying to find ways for the children to stay with them they just send them off to live with their grandmother. This is an example of a selfish act the parents make for not taking the responsibility fo raising their children that they brought into this world but sending them off to live with their grandmother. Also, the father just backing into his childrens life then just leaving abruptly a cruel thing that a parent can do to their own child. However, a racially cruel scene can be seen in the Stamps when Maya is raised to believe that white people are superior to blacks and it is best to not say anything to them for it will only cause harm. Meaning that woman who survive the obstacles they face get better but they will still have more obstacle in their, way. In the end these obstacles will help the person mature and understand the world and become a survivor. In order to get a job as a street car conductor Maya took time off from her school in order to persist to get this job despite the racist hiring policies. After countless times she succeeds in becoming the first black person to work on the San Francisco street cars.
