Daisy’s Emotional Ride Strong emotions, memories of the past, betrayal, and pain can cloud a person's judgment. The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a collection of events and recorded experiences from the summer of 1922. The story follows the life of Nick Carroway, Jay Gatsby, Tom and Daisy Buchanan, George and Myrtle Wilson, and Jordan Baker. Intense in-the-moment emotions can control a person's decisions and cloud their judgment impacting them and the people around them. Gatsby has never once let go of the past he and Daisy shared before he went off to war, he has also never left behind his hopes and dreams of the future that he and Daisy would have together someday. Gatsby has dedicated his life to getting back together with Daisy, but Daisy’s relationship with Tom has always been in the way, that is, until Daisy decided that it wouldn’t be in the way anymore. “ Daisy comes over quite often in the afternoons.” (Fitzgerald, 114). Daisy’s marriage to Tom that has been falling apart has overtaken her emotions and is causing her to impulsively throw herself into an affair with Gatsby. Now that Daisy is receiving the love, attention, and excitement that is and has been lacking in her marriage with Tom recently she does not notice when Gatsby starts making her believe that she has never loved Tom. This leads Daisy to beginning to believe that she wants to end her marriage with Tom and run away with Gatsby. For a period of time Daisy believes all of this and thinks she is ready to end everything with Tom so she can be with Gatsby. All of these emotions that Daisy feel between Tom and Gatsby are very strong, impulsive, and intense. But no matter how hard Gatsby trys there is still one thing that he has a hard time coming to reality with. Even though Daisy does not work and has what looks like zero daily responsibilities she rarely seems to spend any time with her daughter Pammy who appears to be being raised by her nanny because of how little Daisy and Tom acknowledge her existence. “The nurse took a step forward and help out her hand” “Come Pammy.” ( Fitzgerald, 117) The nanny is the main caregiver for Pammy, This is odd especially because Daisy is usually at home. Daisy is a careless mother and we can see this in her actions and her priorities in life. Daisy prioritizes her social life, status, and image as we can see in the way she talks, acts and dresses herself along with how secretive she is in spending so much of her time at Gatsbys. If she has time to put this much effort into her image and sneaking around then she should have enough time to be building a relationship and creating memories with her young daughter who is her only child.
