Is dehumanization for entertainment acceptable?
In the novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins,
24 tributes, 2 people per district, are sacrificed and forced to fight until death. This fight, or as the Capitol calls this
, “The Hunger Games”, is live streamed like a reality TV show as entertainment.
Within this novel series, some of the tributes refuse to obey and to take this dehumanization. Ways that they have resisted include, by being pressured to break the rules of the game and let Katniss live. Katniss wears her mockingjay pin as a sign of rebellion against the Capitol. The third example is that Peeta and Katniss refuse to let the other die,even if that results in their own death.

The capitol calls this a game and completely disregards that these are real people with real lives.At the beginning of the second chapter it is discussed that nobody believes the games are fair, especially for 12 year olds. “Somewhere far away, I can hear the crowd mummering unhappily as they do when a twelve-year-old gets chosen because no one thinks this is fair.” In the games, anyone from ages 12-18 can get picked. The moment you turn 12, you always have to fear death. It can happen to anyone, an example of this is the quote I have just written. In the Hunger Games book, we see many other tributes die. All of these tributes are within the ages of 12-18. A great example of this that we see is Rue. Rue was a 12-year old girl that became tribute for District 11. During Rue's death we see how much Katniss is affected. “I crouch before her, staring helplessly at the embedded weapon. There’s no point in comforting words, in telling her she’ll be all right. She’s no fool. Her hand reaches out and I clutch it like a lifeline. As if it’s me who’s dying instead of Rue.” Rue dying was a great example of Katniss rebelling because shorty after her loss Katniss says “I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can’t own.
