In the first two scenes of Romeo and Juliet, we see Romeo is heartbroken over Rosaline, his "one true love". I would characterize Romeo as handsome, intelligent, a romantic, but very sensitive. Romeo is depressed and sad about Rosaline. He goes on and on about how she doesn't love him and how love is a painful experience. Even Lord Montague is concerned because he said, " Many a morning hath he there been seen, With tears augmenting the fresh morning's dew, Adding to clouds more clouds with her deep sighs... The shady curtains from Aurora's bed, Away from light steals home my heavy son, And private in his chambers pens himself, Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out, And makes …show more content…

I would characterize this behavior as childish and immature. He fell in love and he doesn't even know her. All he sees is her beauty and thinks he is in love with her. Anytime Benvolio or Mercutio tries to cheer him up, he just acts depressed and brings down the whole mood of the group. Romeo believes that dreams can be real because they reflect reality, while Mercutio argues that they lie. Queen Mab of the fairies visits people's dreams. She creates dreams that reflect the individual's desires and passions. For example, when Queen Mab visits lovers, they dream of love, lawyers dream of money, and courtiers dream of curtsies. The story begins as happy and joyful then it becomes angry and sinister. Queen Mab represents the dreams and desires of sleepers. Mercutio also thinks that dreams, just like Queen Mab, are fragile, nonsense, and corrupt. In the movie, she is symbolized as an ecstasy tablet. Ecstasy is often called "the love pill" because it amplifies sensations especially when someone touches another. It influences the way people make decisions based on what they are feeling. It is symbolic to show that love is like a drug. When you find love, you get addicted to it and never wanted to let go. In that scene, Romeo intakes that ecstasy tablet. That implies that he is high when he is going to this party. It alters the way we view and understand Romeo's decision or emotions in the scenes to follow because he is high. He is under the influence, so most of his decisions and emotions will
