Thematic Thinker – Day 3 Theme A theme present in these two chapters is “Living far away from a loved one can distance your relationship.” Ming and Fitzgerald were very close and met each other often but ever since Ming moved their relationship isn’t what it used to be. They are no longer able to meet each other and they are only able to talk on the phone which isn’t enough to keep their relationship going. Three Passages “Both she and Fitzgerald were there on Mondays and Tuesdays, but on Wednesdays neither of them went to the hospital.
1. The Valley of Ashes is the farm land or almost like a wasteland filled with ashes that separates the wealth of the East and West Egg Village. 2. “The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic — their irises are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose” (Fitzgerald 23).
Michael McCarter, Todd Stevenson and an unknown Pi Tau brother stepped forward, the latter holding a video camera. Stevenson spoke first, his voice pleasant and inviting. “Welcome to the final day of Hell Week, gentlemen. You are one task away from becoming members of the most elite fraternity on campus. Congratulations on making it this far.”
Diary 1 Nick Carraway distinguishes himself as both the creator and the storyteller. He calls himself a man of liberality and a man of incredible ethics. He battled in war, and now fills in as a bondsman on Long Island. He joins his cousin, Daisy, and her better half, Tom, for supper one night where they examined current occasions, and also methods of insight. In the wake of returning home, Scratch sees Gatsby, his neighbor, yet chooses to abandon him be.
Chapter 1: 2. When Nick first enters the Buchanan's house, the scene is not presented realistically. It is said that, "...the two young women ballooned slowly to the floor" (12). The women are painted as objects or even furniture in the room. This makes it seem as though Tom Buchanan is indeed the man of the household, and a strong one at that.
The passages I chose in this Novel is what I deem to be important to the climax of this Novel. From the passages that I chose it would seem that since the group decided to travel to Spain that's when things began to happen. Before Spain, when they were staying in Paris, they would all go out as a group of friends, drinking, partying, dancing, and just having a good time together. But now that they're in Spain it seems like things are starting to heat up and i’m not just talking about the weather.
Nick and Gatsby are outside the Buchanan’s’ house. Nick looks through a window and sees Daisy and Tom having a conversation at the kitchen table with a plate of cold fried chicken and two bottles of ale between them. "They weren’t happy, and neither of them had touched the chicken or the ale—and yet they weren’t unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together." Nick is wondering what they could be talking about.
1. “I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father said snobbishly, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth.’ Ch.1 Analysis: nick is tying to say that Money isn’t always what people are born into; especially in this time people who are born into money are considered the upper class and above all. Some people are just a better person in general even without being born into a rich family he doesn’t know if a person has to be born into wealth to have natural class or just be classy on their own.
Nick describes meeting Gatsby for the first time at one of his parties and one thing that strikes him is Gatsby’s smile. The smile is personified in that it is said to concentrate on the one it is directed at and have prejudices. Fitzgerald may be characterizing Nick with this smile. Nick may see what he wants to see in the smile. Having recently moved to West Egg to try his hand in the bond business, Nick may be in search of the understanding, assurance, and support that the smile is providing.
Also, in the passage, Nick uses many phrases to describe Gatsby that expresses his emotions. For instance, Nick characterizes his feelings for Gatsby who represents, “an unaffected scorn” which deals with everything Nick dislikes. As seen earlier in the passage, Nick
Seen by others “As soon as I arrived I made an attempt to find my host, but the two or three people of whom I asked his whereabouts stared at me in such an amazed way, and denied so vehemently any knowledge of his movements, that I slunk off in the direction of the cocktail table – the only place in the garden where a single man could linger without looking purposeless and alone.” (Fitzgerald, 42) This quote describes Nick and how he gets invited to Gatsby’s party when he doesn’t know who Gatsby is. He asks people at the party and they have never seen him before. Gatsby is seen as mysterious to many people.
’”(48) This gives off the impression that he thinks Gatsby is a fine man, one of the better even. Most of the characters seem to have a weird relationship or opinion about him, whereas this line gives a sense of comfort, provoking the thought that Gatsby is a good man. If Nick were not the narrator, we wouldn’t have gotten this inside opinion. If Gatsby had been narrating and we heard things about him being a fine man it would be harder to believe considering people tend to talk highly of
At the end of The Great Gatsby, Nick reflects upon Gatsby’s life and pursuit on the beach where “the green light” at the end of Daisy’s dock can be seen. As a significant metaphor, “the green light” represents Gatsby’s dream which guides him to keep pursuing wealth and social status, while the position of the light, the distant and inaccessible Daisy’s dock, indicates the close connection between Gatsby’s unreal dream and Daisy, and as well the disillusionment of the dream. In the last three paragraphs, Nick explains the disillusionment of Gatsby’s dream, “He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it” (162). Gatsby has always strived for his ambition and dream.
I had one of those renewals of complete faith that I’d experienced before” (136). Even after Gatsby reveals the truth about his life, Nick still has the utmost respect for him. It is plausible that Nick would have have maintained his faith if Gatsby would not have informed him of his actual
