Betty Smith once said, “There’s a tree that grows in brooklyn. Some people call it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seeds fall, it makes a tree which struggles to reach the sky.” In the novel Harbor Me, six little seeds with contrasting backgrounds sit, trapped in a room with the mere presence of confusion in the air. However as the time goes on the kids create a special connection, and the air gets filled with stories, adventures and memories. These children’s names are Haley, Holly, Esteban, Amari, Tiago and Ashton. The term “Dialogue” means a conversation between two or more people. Woodson remarks on page 42 “We think they took my papi when he was coming home from work, Esteban Said.” This quote signifies Esteban finally opening up to the ARTT kids, being the first person to create a new bond between the members. However it also builds suspense because it leaves the reader wondering of where Esteban’s papi may be. Furthermore this statement was used several times throughout the novel, causing the reader to want to keep reading in hope to find an answer. In this quote all of the ARTT kids are listening to Amari rapping on the recorder. This drives the plot because it gives us some knowledge on how the different ART kids react to the hearing themselves on the voice recorder. In other words, when the author describes how the different ARTT kids listen and react to Amari’s voice on the recorder.
