Discomfort is something we all face. Without it, there would be no growth and no progress. According to Caroline Myss, “discomfort is a wise teacher.” Discomfort is a common theme in may literary works, including the “Sword of Damocles” and Julius Caesar. The myth “The Sword of Damocles” by William F. Russel is about a cruel king and a foolish flatterer who learns a lesson about what it really is to be king. The play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is about a group of conspirators who assassinated Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome. The theme discomfort, while present in everyday life, is also present in The Sword of Damocles and Julius Caesar. The theme of discomfort is present throughout the Sword of Damocles. First of all, danger can cause uneasiness. According to the text, Damocles was very uncomfortable with the sword hanging over his head(Russel 51.) This demonstrates that the thought of potential danger can be uncomfortable, further proving that the theme is discomfort. Equally important, stress causes displeasure. All the king’s courtiers live in distress and are worried that the king will become angry and turn on them(Russel 50.)
