Dramatic irony is very common in entertainment. It is when the audience knows something that the characters do not. Shakespeare uses this a lot in his plays. For example, when Hamlet writes a play about King Hamlet's death (3.2). Only the audience and Hamlet know the true intention of the play is to watch King Claudius reaction to having the story be the retelling of King Claudius murder of King Hamlet. The irony of the situation is that everyone is gathered to watch a play but King Claudius is the one getting watched. His reaction is important to Hamlet for confirming that what the Ghost of his father said about his murder is true. It is something that catches the audience by surprise. There are many examples of this in Hamlet. To explain, after Hamlet was sent to England with letters telling the King of England to kill him, we get letters from Hamlet. It describes how his ship was taken over by pirates and he was abducted. He also talks about the letters and that he has something for the King (4.6). This is a big plot twist because of how we ended the previous acts it was looking like Hamlet was going to be killed in England before getting his revenge. The audience was left wondering what was going to happen and what would be the result of his death. This plot twist caused the audience to get surpised with a different outcome then what was expected. Finally, another example of plot twist is when Gertrude drinks the poisend goblet that was meant for Hamlet and she ends up dying (5.2). This whole act was chaos and twist that were not originally part of the plan. The cup was meant to kill Hamlet and Gertrude drank it for Hamlet and to his goodluck. This unexpected part of the story leaves the audience at the end of the play feeling like “what happened?” All of this confusion and Gertrude ends up dying not just Hamlet, Claudius and Laertes who were the main
