When a person undergoes a break-up, they usually go through the nine stages of grief according to Psychology Today. One of the stages of grief is depression; in “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare shows this stage of a breakup. Shakespeare uses allusions and oxymoron to show Romeo’s miserable personality after a break up. By using allusion, Shakespeare characterizes Romeo as depressed.

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most original romantic plays and classic tragedy in English literacy by Shakespeare. The play revolves around the love between two young people and the conflict through two warring families. The theme of love and violence is reoccurring throughout the text, and Shakespeare uses a broad variety of dramatic conventions like imagery, oxymorons and figurative language. Used to heighten drama and help readers better understand what he is trying to describe.
One of the tools used in satire is the apostrophe. This happens when a character speaks to someone who isn’t there. For example, in "Romeo and Juliet," when Juliet says, "O, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? " she is talking to Romeo, even though she thinks he isn’t there. Introduction: Shakespeare is famous for the way he produces plays that he makes and how he shows emotion throughout them. In the play "Romeo and Juliet" there are two characters Tybalt and Benvolio. Shakespeare brings Tybalt and Benvolio to life with emotions being expressed in almost every scene, Tybalt is a very loud and easily angered man, but Benvolio doesn’t like to fight and tries to settle things down almost instantly. From the very beginning of the play, Shakespeare, is holding fate to blame for the death of the two lovers. In the line “from forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” foreshadowing, metaphor and alliteration are used to show how Romeo and Juliet’s love would end in tragedy. Foreshadowing is used to create suspense leading to a later scene in the play where the lover’s suicide. The metaphor “star-crossed lovers” suggest the prophetic alignments of the stars are against them. The lovers are ill-fated from the start.
