Francis Nosike 09/24/16 AP Literature Mr. Amoroso Death cannot be explained because it’s not a living entity; it’s the transformation from a physical state to dust. In the novel Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya; Antonio, the protagonist, witnessed three deaths that fostered his religious ambivalence. Therefore, the three deaths formulated a cycle of inquiries that lead to the constant statement, ‘anyone could die.’ No living soul on this plain could ever explain how death operates. The abstract conception of death itself is challenging, but with time, we slowly begin to comprehend the ‘true’ nature of death and what it brings to us.
Two Sisters, Two Americas is a brilliant article by Brooke Ross that illustrates the life of a family with a mixed-status and what should be done about it. Many people agree that an illegal immigration reform is necessary however people can’t seem to agree on what needs to be done about it. The issue about the immigration reform has created many fights between democrats and Republicans and although both sides think something needs to be done they can’t agree on what to do. Although most people don’t seem to realize is that illegal immigrants are people like us who are trying to find safety and better opportunities. It is clear that illegal immigrants need some pathway to becoming a citizen.

Death is the ultimate unknown, will it bring sorrow or a feeling of fulfillment? This quandary of humanity is explored thoroughly in the poem “An Echo Sonnet” by Robert Plack. It details a speaker conflicted about his interest to continue living, since both options present a mystery in what they will bring to him. This internal dilemma is constructed through multiple literary devices that function to connect emotions of despair to the poem’s focus.. Specifically, the poem’s _________, ________, ________, and __________ work to express the aimlessness of the speaker by emphasizing the emotions the speaker has when he decides whether or not life will ever bring him happiness.
Emerson, in a grand attempt to share a metaphor of a beautiful instrument, simply, yet boldly utters, “trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string” (3). The awe-inspiring metaphor can be deciphered as this: if what is in your heart feels right, it is right. Emerson believes that people’s thoughts and feelings are naturally right because they are their own thoughts and feelings. Through this metaphor, Emerson is able to paint a majestic picture of what many might see as an angel playing harp, with music gently reassuring the audience that what they each think and feel is divine. The speaker generates pathos in his audience as he kindly reminds the people to have confidence in themselves.
I might as well have attempted to arrest an avalanche! Down—still unceasingly—still inevitably down! I gasped and struggled at each vibration. I shrunk convulsively at its every sweep. My eyes followed its outward or upward whirls with the eagerness of the most unmeaning despair; they closed themselves spasmodically at the descent, although death would have been a relief,
Brian Fitzgerald, the father of Anna, Kate and Jesse Fitzgerald, is a firefighter and spends his days battling the fires, both real and symbolic, which destroy other people’s lives. Unfortunately, he is unable to fight the fires within his own life, and this leads to the destruction of his ability to save his family from the difficult situations they face. The Fitzgerald family’s medical and moral issues that stem from Anna being born as a medical donor for Kate affect each of the characters in different ways. In My Sister’s Keeper, fire is the mechanism used to symbolize these problems that the Fitzgerald family faces. Fire in a general sense is the combustion that occurs when fuel reacts with oxygen to release heat energy.

Gothic novels are often classified by their use of supernatural elements, dismal atmospheres, decaying settings (sometimes in the form of castles or dark buildings), and the mysterious. Additionally, authors may use the element of a manuscript or an item that is purported to be the origin of the story. In the preface to The Scarlet Letter, “The Custom-House,” Hawthorne discovers such a manuscript left behind by a Surveyor Pue, along with a scarlet letter “A” that serves to be an artifact of some magic, intertwining the tangible and fictional realms. Aside from magic, Gothic stories also involve some castle or similarly decrepit structure; Governor Bellingham’s mansion serves this purpose in Hawthorne’s novel. Bellingham’s home was grand and
The Mirabal sisters were revolutionaries who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. During the revolution, they were given the code name “Las Mariposas”, or “the butterflies”. The term “mariposa” suits each sister in a different way. Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and Mate Mirabal each have their one reason to be compared to a butterfly. The nickname “mariposa” shows who the Mirabal sisters are; they transformed from domestic, innocent mothers and wives into brave, defiant martyrs for national freedom.

In the Second Meditation, what is the Cogito, and what does it tell me for certain about my own existence? What is strongest and what is weakest in Descartes’ account? The second meditation is based on the connection between a conscious and an existing body. Descartes has one main problem that he wishes to solve “How can he be sure that any of his beliefs are true?”
Expanding on the theme of the preceding verse related to making a show of piety, this verse compares mere lip service in remembrance of the Beloved without the involvement of the heart and mind, coupled with a load of sins carried by the individual, to a broken boat, which will never reach ashore safely. One of the consistently repeated messages of this work pertains to the futility in the pursuit and attainment of the Beloved through lip service. The first line of this verse embodies this message, just as a number other preceding verses convey a similar message – verses one, three, fifty-eight and sixty-eight. The word bhār, which literally means, ‘weight’, ‘load’, ‘burden’ in Gujarati, refers to the sins and transgressions committed by an individual.
Throughout the poem, Divakaruni uses an extended metaphor to represent the feelings behind Neeraj’s teacher’s words - which, when it comes to him, are always negative. Neeraj internally transforms the words of his teacher into colors and
