The Victorian Era lasted for 64 years while Queen Victoria reigned. Entertainment was a huge part of this time because they did not have the modern technology we have today to keep them amused. First off, one big form of entertainment in the Victorian era, was sports. Not only playing, but watching as well. Some traditional sports commonly played were cricket, football, and boxing. The more popular games that were played were bicycling, croquet, lawn tennis, roller skating, and horseback riding. There were also some well-liked water sports such as rowing, canoeing, and swimming. (“Games of the Victorian Era”) Next, there were many different pastimes that the Victorians used to cure their boredom. Music Hall Entertainment was a big pastime of the Victorian era. Music Hall Entertainment was a type of theatrical entertainment with a mix of popular songs, comedy, speciality acts, and more. (“Music Hall”) Another interesting pastime of this era was railway excursions. On the long journey, they would typically bring books to keep busy. People would read things like books and newspapers. They would read books the same amount of time that we are on our phones today. The availability of free or cheap books in libraries helped the Victorians get into reading. One of these hobbies was keeping scrapbooks. This was more popular for the women and children of this time. Trade cards, die-cuts, and greeting cards were put into the scrapbooks and arranged in an artistic matter. Most were made with leather covers and brass locks, and engraved clasps.
