Great Gatsby Essay According to the oxford Canadian dictionary the definition of irony is, “the expression of meaning using language that normally expresses the opposite.” I will discuss some instances were irony takes place within The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald. Some of these examples of irony are Gatsby’s huge parties for Daisy, Tom’s two lovers, and Daisy’s car crash.
Admired Author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, in his renown novel, The Great Gatsby, emphasizes the emotional state of Nick after the passing of his close friend. Fitzgerald’s main purpose is to reveal the gloomy, final thoughts that still linger in Nick’s mind about the demise of Gatsby and his elaborate lifestyle. His strong use of imagery creates a heartrending attitude in Nick which grasps on to the mind of the readers. In the book The Great Gatsby The narrator Nick Carraway says, “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known”(Fitzgerald 59). Nick’s statement is a very broad statement but it is true, basically all of the characters in this book are very dishonest or are just a little dishonest but participate in big lies. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby is full of lies. About all of the characters in the great gatsby are untruthful and dishonest. Everybody around Nick is dishonest, like how Tom is cheating on Daisy with Myrtle, or how Jordan cheated on her first golf tournament, but most of lying is from Gatsby and Daisy.
People are overly ambitious in wanting to take power from the person who has the most of it. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding a group of boys, none who are older than 13, are deserted on an island after their plane crashes. The boys make a sort of government and elect a leader, they create rules and have fun. This was in the beginning though over time the boys start to become more savage and brutal they start to lose their once civilized nature and end up killing some of the other boys. Throughout the novel, Gatsby is seen being dishonest by not telling people who was the person to really hit and kill Myrtle. Although Gatsby does not have any bad intentions, he could have prevented getting shot if he had only told the truth. After the accident, Gatsby and Nick were speaking and Gatsby happend to say, “yes, he said after a moment, but of course i’ll say I was” (Fitzgerald 143). It is clear that Gatsby is fine with taking the blame for Daisy since he is in love with her. The real reason Gatsby took the blame for daisy is because he felt that taking the blame will make him appear as a well respected, old money man.
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald describes the 1920’s. One way he describes the 1920’s is the reaction of World War 2 was depressing. During the 1920’s the government had gave women’s rights because the flappers were independent women’s. In the 1920’s there was a prohibition when alcohol was banned, people could not drink no more and it was time when corruption and crime began. In chapter 5 Nick invites Gatsby and Daisy over for tea in hopes that Gatsby and Daisy find that special zing again. As the night goes on Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick go into Gatsby’s mansion. In an attempt to show off his riches and success, “[Gatsby] took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them… shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel…” (p.92). The American Dream suggests that every American citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work. One of the major ways that Fitzgerald portrays this is by alluding to outside events or works of literature specifically from that time period. Another major relationship that develops in The Great Gatsby is between Tom and Daisy. F. Scott Fitzgerald alludes to things such as the World’s Fair and “The Love Nest” to display the eventual dismantling of Tom and Daisy’s relationship. Both of these separate plots consolidate under the idea of Gatsby trying to become the epitome of the American Dream, as seen through his strive for a “perfect life.”
First Words The first words a character says in a book can determine how you view them. F. Scott /Fitzgerald does this very well in his book The Great Gatsby where the first words the characters say reflect their true character.
