Many things to Gain “Friends,Romans,countrymen,lend me your ears”(III,I,1) In William Shakespeare's “Julius Caesar” Antony, Caesar’s associate, uses rhetoric throughout his speech to gain many different feelings from the citizens. In the beginning of Antony’s speech he uses pathos to gain sympathy from the citizens.“I come to bury Caesar,not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them”(III,1,1)Antony uses pathos when he says this because he wants to gain sympathy from the audience by saying “bury caesar” to make the crowd/citizens sympathetic.He is trying to get the citizens to sympathize of Caesar’s death.”Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me.” (III,2,1) Antony uses pathos again to get the crowd upset about his death. The citizens started to feel sorrow and sadness. “And they would go and kiss dead caesars wounds, and dig up their napkins in his sacred blood.”(III,3,1) He uses pathos here because the conspirators actions are violent and they are showing off every little bit of dead caesar. Kind souls what weep when you but behold”(III,6,3) The logos used in this shows the logic of Caesars soul.The intention was to show ceasar and get the crowd's reaction and to upset them. It was also supposed to be an eye opening experience. “O, now you weep and I perceive you feel”(III,6,3) They used logos to help make an image of the citizens weeping over the death of Caesar. “Though this the well beloved brutus and he plucked his curse steel away”(III,5,3) He uses logos again to show the citizens what Caesar's body really looks like and to show them each wound on him.
