During the Holocaust, Jews and other persecuted groups sought help from some individuals and organizations, who would often provide forged documents. They sought to create false identities or obtain forged documents to escape persecution or deportation by the Nazis. As seen in the story of George Mandel-Mantello, a Hungarian businessman who operated from the consulate general of El Salvador in Switzerland, issuing false identity certificates to Jews across Europe. Mantello’s motivation to start this operation was due to him being quite offended by the idea that there were people out there who were exploiting and profiting from the desperate situation by selling false identity certificates on the black market. After witnessing this injustice, Mantello said “Forget about the money, we're going to find something more direct and more powerful to do” (Yad Vashem). In his operation, Mantello issued false identity certificates which he “dispatched through diplomatic pouches or regular Swiss mail,” while others were “delivered by underground messengers” (USHMM). Mantello's actions extended beyond false identities; he also played a crucial role in disseminating the Auschwitz Protocol, shedding light on Nazi atrocities. Another hero during the Holocaust was Sir Nicholas Winton, a British stockbroker who “saved 669 children” during the Holocaust (USHMM). Operating under the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, Winton organized a comprehensive rescue operation, securing funds and guarantees for the children's welfare in Britain. Shortly after arriving in Auschwitz, Elie and his father were forced to lie about their ages in order to appear older and therefore more capable of work, which could potentially spare them from being selected for immediate execution or sent to the gas chambers. Elie needed to lie about being younger than his age, while his father needed to do the opposite. In such dire situations, Elie and his father fabricated information that hid their true identity to increase their chances of survival, similar to the survivors living in the ghettos who had to fabricate their appearance to avoid detection.
