In The City of Ember almost every citizen has the same fear that the generator will soon stop working for their town underground and the lights will go out with their dwindling supply of just about everything. But these three characters go beyond a simple fear of when the power will go out and act on those fears. The mayor of the city and his reaction to if power was lost is different from many and has a deeper fear hunger mixed with greed. Lina Mayfleet cared for the town and for her younger sister Poppy and did not want anything to happen to them. Doon Harrow has a fear of disappointment that his adventures through the pipework won’t result in anything good.
Mayor Lemander Cole had known that the generator would soon give out and had thought of a plan so that he could live past his citizens in this event. With this fear it pushed him to lie to everyone and say,“There is a solution.” while he truly didn’t care what happened. "That's the solution he keeps telling us about. It's a solution for him, not the rest of us. He gets everything he needs, and we get the leftovers! He doesn't care about the city. All he cares about is his fat stomach!"(Duprau 158-159). “It was the thought of Poppy, lost, that she couldn't stand,”(79). After a blackout she lost her only sibling and because her parents were both dead she never wanted to lose her. She had grandparents but they died soon into the story and Lina would do anything for Poppy. This love to an extent went to their the town too. "Running made her feel strong and big-hearted, it made her love the places she ran through and the people whose messages she delivered" (31).
