Dante’s Inferno is the story of how the narrator and a man named Virgil journey through the 9 Circles of Hell. The Divine Comedy is about the universal quest for God. One of the important elements in Dante’s Inferno is evil as the contradiction of God’s will. He uses visual and allegorical imagery, figurative language and concrete physical descriptions to tell his readers what exactly Hell looks like. He is trying to convince his readers of his message. His message is that there are different consequences for different sins in the afterlife. His book describes basically human evil and the various types. The third ring is a barren plain of sand ignited by flakes of fire that torment three separate groups of violent offenders against God (Dante’s Inferno). The inhabitants of the third ring are those who offend God directly (blasphemers); those who violate nature, God’s offspring (sodomites); and those who harm industry and the economy, offspring of nature and therefore grandchild of God (usurers) (Dante’s Inferno). This level of hell is guarded by the Minotaur. The punishment for murders is staying in the river of blood and centaurs with bows shoot those who try to flee. The one’s who committed suicide stay in the wood of the suicides. Then there is the scorching sand. This is where those who committed violence against God and nature are drenched with flakes of fire. The Eighth Circle of Hell is Fraud. This level of hell is divided into 10 stony ditches with bridges between them. In ditch one is panderers and seducers. Ditch 2 is home to all of the flatters. Ditch 3 is those who are guilty of simony. Ditch 4 is for sorcerers and false prophets. Ditch 5 houses the corrupt politicians. Ditch 6 is full of hypocrites.
