Can One Sin Be Better Than Another? In Dante’s Alighieri the Inferno translated by John Ciardi is a journey of Dante and his guide Virgil through hell. During the 12th century sin was against God and the church, not the King anymore. The Roman Catholic Church was extremely important at this time. Dante goes on his journey through hell leads to insight on his political views of religion at the time. This book is significant because Dante was going against what everyone believed and the King. His actions and beliefs we looked down upon. While wandering through hell Dante describes each level of and why the souls of these people were in this circle because of their similar sins they committed. As Virgil and Dante traveled farther down into hell the punishments for the sins drastically worsened because the sin was worse. If God says a sin is a sin can one be worse than the other? Suicide has been on the rise in the past years and the different religions believe different punishments for killing yourself. The Catholic church believes that suicide is one hundred percent a sin and you will be sent directly to hell. Taking your own life because of your pain only relieves yourself from suffering on Earth, but you would still suffer in hell for eternity. Based on Dante’s journey sinners who killed themselves resided in the second ring of circle seven. The sin is not the worst sin possible, but your punishments is still severe and crueler than others. In canto thirteen Dante is told to rip off a branch from a tree. This is significant because it is telling the story of soul who committed suicide. Here in this circle of hell they are punished by the constant reminder what they rejected. If they are able to return to their body it is not fully because they just discarded their body
