In the novel The Hobbit, Tolkien uses figurative language to contribute to the overall tone of the story by giving the readers a feel of what the characters are experiencing. Since the story takes place in a time before our own, the author used symbolism and wordplay to make the story's tone be dark and mysterious to match with the story’s origin.
