In the story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier there are several figurative language sentences and symbols that have meaning to the overall theme of the story. "Everything was suddenly out of tune, like a broken accordion." (Collier 11) This means that Lizabeth is explaining everything she is going through and how her life and emotions are. She uses an accordion to describe this because an accordion is a fun and upbeat instrument and a "broken accordion" is the complete opposite.
One example of figurative language in Laurie Hale Anderson’s book “Speak” is when Melinda decides to rid her garden of all weeds, and does some spring cleaning after it finally stops raining during May. Around the same time, Melinda is realizing that she wants to make some new changes in her life and in this figurative language example, Melinda’s life is her garden. She decides first to rake the leaves “suffocating the bushes” ; Melinda is ridding the demons from herself on the first layer of her skin. She says that she has to “fight the bushes (her problems)” and the bushes don’t like getting cleaned out but it is something one has to do if one makes
The author uses figurative language to strengthen the poem by adding more detail. He explains what things feel like,sound like,look like, and even taste like. Without figurative language the writing would be boring and short.the imagery describes how the setting looked and gave the reader more knowledge. Throughout this excerpt, the use of imagery is vital to the evolution of Chief Bromden. Chief wakes up with the sudden urge to do something. As he walks around, he feels the cold tiles against his feet, and he realizes how many times he had walked on the tiles before, but had never felt it at all. “I walked down the windows to one where the shade popped softly in and out with the breeze, and I pressed my head against the mesh.” In this paragraph the imagery of the smells and Chief presses his head against the mesh, appeals to the senses of smell and touch.
Most well written and descriptive stories use many disparate tools to make it better. The author of the story The Veldt used figurative language, imagery, and diction to foreshadow the tragic ending of the story. In the end the children use the lions from Africa to slaughter their parents ,and you can kind of guess that the children are planning something evil because of the descriptions and figurative language in the story. The children give off a very negative aura throughout the whole story that leads you to believe that something cynical is occuring.
1. The line “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food” is a hyperbole and zeugma. The word that creates the zeugma is the word lived, as the narrator uses the word lived to mean different things in the same context. The narrator actually lived off of paychecks and government food, but did not literally live off of hope and fear like the line suggests. The line is also a hyperbole because the author did not literally live off of the hope and fear, as you cannot sustain yourself with emotions.
Jimmy Santiago Baca wrote a poem called “I am offering this poem”. Jimmy once said, “love is providing you with all that you need, for example guidance and comfort.” He says this to explain what he means in his poem about love. One figurative language technique the author uses is repetition in line 7 “i love you.” The other uses repetition to show that he is writing the poem like a love letter; to show the reader how he feels about his significant other.

In his short story “The Pedestrian”, Ray Bradbury uses figurative language to reveal the characterization of Mr. Leonard Mead. First, Bradbury describes Mead’s shadow as “moving like the shadow of a hawk in midcountry.” By using this simile, Mead can be characterized as moving alone and quietly through a seemingly abandoned area, creating him as a peaceful, desolate man. Next, Mead is described as standing “not unlike a night moth, stunned by the illumination.” This simile, compares Mead to a night moth, obviously not used to and surprised by the bright light in the normal darkness, as he prefers to be at peace in the twilight.
The pie by Gary Soto tells the story of a six years old boy. This boy lets the temptation get the best of him leading him to steal a pie. He struggles with the guilt throughout the story feeling as if he has disappointed everyone even though know one knew. Soto uses figurative language such as personification, allusion, metaphors, and similes to entertain the reader. His main intention is entertain but I can argue that he wrote the story to inform as well.
Defending Jacob With an abrupt ending and an insight on a fourteen year old boy with a cruel hobby, this intense book can have more in common with other texts than anticipated. To clarify, Defending Jacob by William Landay, “If” by Rudyard Kipling, and “The Art of Resilience” by Hara Estroff Marano display how a person owns the ability to change what happens in his or her life. This theme is exhibited through figurative language, imagery, and foreshadowing. By including figurative language, the authors of these literary works were able to enhance certain elements of the story. For example, in Defending Jacob, the neighbors continued to see Jacob as if “He was a pariah, whether he was actually guilty or not (Landay 388.).”
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave was written by Frederick Douglass himself, and was published in 1845. Douglass takes the readers through his own experience with American slavery while holding back very little. Douglass’s narrative goes on a journey beginning in his birthplace, Talbot County, Maryland. While Douglass mainly focuses on his own experiences with the American slave trade, he also shares the trials and tribulations of those around him throughout the book. Another attribute of this narrative is the high level of literacy Douglass has.
In the song, “Hard to Say Goodbye,” there are many examples of figurative language, for example, such as hyperboles, allusions, and metaphors. The figurative language used in the song helps us understand and be in the story as it's trying to be told. Instead of being straightforward, it expresses emotions in a creative way that most people can relate to and acknowledge. The emotion we’re meant to feel in this song is a strong love. Using hyperboles and metaphors, the artist is explaining his deep love for his significant other.
Concrete Details/Imagery Gallien starts to notice the settings around him while he is on his way to drop Alex off. “For the first few miles the stampede trail was well graded and led past cabins scattered among weedy stands of spruce and aspen. Beyond the last of the log shacks, however, the road rapidly deteriorated” (Kraukaur 2). This quote creates of visual of the quick change from rural civilization to deep and dense forest.
Sometimes, it’s possible to read between the lines without knowing exactly what is being stated in those lines. Take Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s poem “Yuba City School,” for instance. In this poem, Neeraj, a young boy, and his mother have recently immigrated to California from Punjab, India. At his new school, Neeraj’s teacher repeatedly insults and shames him for not understanding English, and it takes its toll. Through the use of figurative language, Divakurani conveys that one does not need to understand what a person is saying word for word in order to comprehend and be affected by what that person’s true message is.
