The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is about a family that lives in Maycomb, Alabama. The people in the family are Atticus Finch, Jem (son), Scout (daughter), and their maid Calpurnia. The novel takes a twist when Atticus, who is a lawyer, is appointed to be Tom’s(who is a black man) attorney. Atticus defends Tom against sexual assault charges, but they do not win the case against the Ewells, even though everything the Ewells said was a lie. The novel explicitly shows that there are many examples of people being prejudice against one another. The first example I chose is Racism. Racism is rather common, and it has been around since the world was created, it will still exist no matter how far into existence the world goes. The second example I chose is gender inequality. They are in ways the same, because, both are seen as lower than white men, and both would be put into a specific class,and expected to do certain things. For example, black men would be expected to work the fields, and women would be expected to stay home and take care of the children. Nowadays it is similar to this but blacks are expected to have lower paying jobs such as waitressing or working a low class job. However, these two have their differences, which are the fact that women were treated just a little bit better just because of their skin color. Another difference is that racism affected women and men, but gender inequality only affected the women. An example would be Mayella Ewell."White people wouldn't have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs; Negroes wouldn't have anything to do with her because she was white"(Lee, 192). Therefore, she was discriminated against, more than women usually were. People felt sad for her because her father beat her up, but, the citizens of Maycomb don’t feel bad because she came onto a black
