In the book The Pearl there are many examples of people filled with greed after Kino discovers the pearl in the ocean. Even Kino himself was filled with greed and refused to give it up. Along with the Doctor who thinks that he can cheat Kino out of his money. And I will also be talking about Juana who was a person that was one of the few people that was not affected by the pearl. Starting off with Kino. Kino was a peaceful man with a perfect family in maybe not the best environment to live in but made the best of it. Once Kino discovered the Pearl he would not give the pearl up for the world. She is presented in the book with no intention of greed. Once she had seen how this pearl changed their lives and the grief it brought them she wanted nothing to do with it anymore. “ ‘This is evil, this pear; is a sin! It will destroy us. Throw it away Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought us evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us’ And in the firelight her lips and her eyes were alive with fear.” She was terrified of the this pearl. It had changed their lives forever. “He looked into its surface and it was gray and ulcerous. Evil faces peered from it into his eyes, and he saw the light burning. And in the surface of the pearl he saw frantic eyes of the man in the pool. And in the surface of the pearl he saw Coyotito lying in the cave with the top of his head shot away. This showed how it can make a person crazy. Or how Juana stayed faithful and still had hope in Kino even though the pearl made him insane. After Coyotito died Kino and Juana realized that they had no future without there child. They had no other reason for why they needed the pearl. The only way that they were going to be free from there poor lives is Coyotito’s future and the knowledge that he would have gotten. Everything had revolved around Coyotito throughout the book. And the one time that they don’t focus on Coyotito, he ends up dying. So that is why they threw it back in the ocean, they had no use for it
