The Truth of What Happens to Mockingbirds In Harper Lee’s book To Kill a Mockingbird, many kind characters are portrayed as bad people. With this will cause many people in the novel pain and things you would not expect for such good people. Stories and lies are told about innocent people be the people in Maycomb county to make them seem like they are bad people, along with betrayal. In the story some people are “mockingbirds” Atticus Finch tells his son Jem“... but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird”(Lee 102). Tom Robinson and Dolphus Raymond are just two examples of people who are made to seem like people they are not. Tom Robinson is a black man who is a hard worker and wants to support his family. Atticus is given the role to take on being Tom’s lawyer. As a kind man who sees everyone equally he takes the case. Even though Atticus knows they will not win the trial because it is a black man’s word against a white man’s, he tries his best “Atticus, are we going to win it?”“No, honey.”(Lee 86). Even though Atticus had proven Robinson innocent with all the questioning he ask towards Mayella and Bob. With one point Atticus makes “Except when he's drinking?”(Lee 209) and Mayella agrees by nodding her head. As she is being questioned she recives looks from her father when she could say something that can get him in trouble “Mayella looked at her father, who was sitting with his chair tipped against the railing. He sat up straight and waited for her to answer”(Lee 209). As we learn earlier Mr. Ewell has a drinking problem and uses the money his family gets for beer. Which can cause him to act differently which is proven by Mayella. Mayella had bruises on the right side of her face and it is believed that Tom had caused them. Yet you learn that Tom’s left arm is not good and can not be used for much, where Mr. Ewell is left handed. Atticus proves that by having him right his name. In order for her to receive bruises on the right side of her body the man who hurt Mayella must have been left handed and Atticus had proven it was not
