Ramses Abboud Ms. Phillips ERWC, Period 5 1 March, 2016 Odysseus Cunning In the epic The Odyssey by Homer there are many themes one of them being cunningness. The protagonist Odysseus is a perfect example of this theme. Odysseus is cunning many times throughout his journey; one would need cleverness to survive in a world of gods and monsters.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, particular characters have some sort of disguise that allows them to deceive others. In the epic, there is also a demonstration of inequality between men and women; there is also an inequality between the two also in the acceptance of cunningness and guile. The idea of guile in The Odyssey was raised multiple times throughout the epic and it was often considered to be wisdom. From the beginning of the epic, we see characters praising men for their “wisdom” and women are oppressed for the majority of their actions, including guile.
Odysseus shows several heroic traits throughout The Odyssey. The most important of these traits is intellect, which Odysseus shows several times during The Odyssey. The first time Odysseus shows intellect during The Odyssey is when he is coming up with a plan to escape the cave of the cyclops Polyphemus. He and his men blind the cyclops with a heated stick. While the cyclops is waiting outside the cave, Odysseus ties his men to the bellies of rams so the cyclops won’t feel them trying to escape.
The Odyssey, a Greek epic involves the story of Odysseus's daring adventures during his return to Ithaca. He fell into numerous difficulties and has to keep himself alive. In the Odyssey Homer changes the Crew in order to reveal his message that strong minded leaders can help the weak minded to his ancient Greek audience and the reader. Strong minded leader help the weak minded develops from when they got tied up by Odysseus, to when the Cyclops ate one of their men in the Cyclops then to where Helios made them sacrificed one of their cattle for him, even though the crew does get distracted sometimes during the journey.
Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey, spends 20 years away from home. He dreams about going home but halfway through his journey, his crew gets killed by a lightning bolt and “Odysseus alone survives. He eventually drifts to Ogygia, the home of Calypso, who keeps him on her island for seven years” (Homer 12.212-213). His crew was loyal to him and had been through many things together.
Solomon Northup/Odysseus Essay According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an odyssey is defined as, “a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune.” The PBS video, Solomon Northup’s Odyssey, displays the hardships of a free African American man who is kidnapped and forced into slavery. During Northup’s twelve year journey as a slave, he faced many unfavorable consequences and few fortunes. Comparatively, in one of Homer’s Greek Epics, The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is held captive by the nymph Calypso and continuously attacked by the God of the Seas, Poseidon.
The Odyssey by Homer is an exemplary story that teaches life lessons to those going on a journey for themselves. It illustrates how the challenges and obstacles one may face can help someone become a better leader. The Odyssey highlights one man, Odysseus, a man filled with excessive pride, experiencing the wrath of the god Poseidon. He expects to arrive at his home, Ithaca, safely to reunite with his wife, Penelope, but unfortunately faces many temptations and setbacks. Due to the challenges he faces, it prevents him from arriving home as early as he thought he would.
In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus. Odysseus goes through many adventures after the victory of the Trojan War. However, this is where Odysseus, is not being as strong as a great war hero and a king as he should be. Although Odysseus was seen as a very strong person, physically and mentally, he lacks the appreciation and the care of his crew throughout the trials and didn’t think through many of his actions thoroughly and how they would affect not only his crew but people around him.
Throughout “The Odyssey” Odysseus is given many epithets. However, the most common, and perhaps the most accurate, relate to his intellect. Odysseus, particularly through the events that occur within books V – XII, is justly referred to as ‘the wise Odysseus’. Within the epic novel of ‘The Odyssey’, Odysseus shows his personality trait of wisdom in his interactions with the Phaeacian’s on the island of Scheria.
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.
Odysseus, after winning the Trojan war, encounters a Cyclops and is banished to the sea “never to see his home again” (384 Homer). Against the son of Poseidon, he backtracks through the waters of Greece, on his treacherous journey home. Odysseus only had one motive to continue his trek back home to Ithaca: “he fought only to save his life and bring his shipmates home” (371 Homer). Through all of his struggles, whether it be a whirlpool, Cyclops, Lotus Eater, or Siren, Odysseus pushed through to save his life and to brings his shipmates home. A timeless classic, The Wizard of Oz, also shares this element with The Odyssey.
A sequel to Famous Roman Story The Iliad , Odyssey is the poem about the l journey of Odysseus. Odysseus is the the son of Laertes and Anticlea. After destroying the city of Troy by cleverly gaining entrance to the city with a wooden Trojan Horse, his journey to return home to Ithaca after the battle of Troy takes ten years. Among his many adventures during this quest, Odysseus had to escape imprisonment by Calypso on the island of Ogygia. Calypso Lets no one leave her island once you've gotten on it.
Imagine being apart from your family for over ten years, fighting for your life in a war, and in the many battles and problems you will face on your way home from war. Would you be able to fight a cyclops, pass a dangerous whirlpool and have to face the fact that your crew betrayed you? In the novel The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus must do all of these things and more. He has been away from his wife, son and many other family members for over ten years now, fighting for his life on his journey home after fighting in the Trojan war.
“Athena wheeled on Odysseus, crying, ‘Royal son of Laertes, Odysseus, master of exploits,/ hold back now! Call a halt to the great leveler, War/ don’t court the rage of Zeus who rules the world!’” (Homer XXIIII. 594-597). A key virtue that some readers overlook in The Odyssey, which displayed prominently by Odysseus, is cunning, which is a skill in achieving one's goal by deceit or evasion, one can only achieve effective cunningness by being smart, having the ability to critically think and make the correct decisions under stress, and having the courage along with bravery to go through with frightening scenarios.
