The pursuit of happiness is another in which Jim Cullen describes as an element of the American Dream. The pursuit of happiness is to be able to acquire the things that somebody might want and love. This element is one that people call more reasonable than other types of elements. This can be seen in Cullen’s article on the line, “The fact that we have such an explicit basis for our actions, most vividly “the pursuit of happiness”, a phrase that more than any other defines the American Dream, treating happiness as a concrete and realizable objective.” This line reveals that that too many the American Dream is seen as the pursuit of happiness to many people. Gatsby’s pursuit of happiness is to sweep up the heart of Daisy because she is his love interest and he won’t let anything stop him. This is revealed in the novel on the page 154 on the line, “The lawn and drive had been crowded with the faces of those who guessed at his corruption- and he had stood on those steps, concealing his incorruptible dream, as he waved them good-bye.” This line in the novel reveals that there are people who want to corrupt Gatsby’s dream of him getting Daisy. However, Gatsby just plays and laughs it off. There is nobody that can stop Gatsby from getting what he wants and doesn’t pay attention to what others think. To him Daisy is the reason that he is alive and his purpose in life was to catch her heart all for himself even though she is already married. In order for him to get to her heart, he has to work harder for him to be on the same social class as her showing that Gatsby is a determine man and won’t take no as an answer. However, Gatsby wasn’t able to achieve his dream of the pursuit of happiness because he was killed. Many people argued that the dream of him and Daisy was to never happen but he didn’t let that
