Who is a hero? A hero takes many forms, such as an allegorical hero, a tragic hero, or an epic hero. In the age of postmodernism, there are instances where a person can be both a hero and a villain. Odysseus is difficult to identify as a hero because of his many vices.
An epic hero is someone who achieves great things and is admired for bravery and humility. In the epic poem The Odyssey written by Homer, the main character, Odysseus, is an epic hero. The characteristics the Odysseus posses to make him an epic her includes bravery, cleverness and determination. Bravery is having courage through tough times.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.

This man suffered much through his years away from home, and after leaving the city of Troy, the only thing Odysseus wishes for is to return to his homeland of Ithaca so he can see his family. He does a few unheroic things, but he understands that what he does is wrong, and gets his deserved punishment. Odysseus endures the hardship that gods, creatures, and other people cause him, just to return home, and with his skills and determination, he accomplishes his goal.

The concept of epic heroism is incredibly significant because of its eternal life and its survival through ancient times to modern popular culture.
