A hero can be anyone. In the book “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, the two characters Pony and Darry are heroes. Another character, Dally, is not. A hero is someone who never gives up, puts his or her life on the line for others, and cares for everyone. Anyone can be a hero.
Pony Curtis is a hero. Pony picks up glass from a broken bottle and when he gets acknowledged for doing so by Two-bit he thinks to himself “I didn't know what he was talking about, so I just went on picking up the glass from the bottle end and put it in a trash can. I didn't want anyone to get a flat tire.” (pg. 146) He said that he picked up the piece of glass because he didn't want anyone to get a flat tire. This is heroic because he cares for another person who he might not even know. Pony also saved kids from burning to death. Pony and Johnny willingly ran into the burning church to save the kids. When he was running, he was thinking… “I started at a dead run for the church and the man caught my arm. I jerked loose and ran on,”(pg. 78). Darry was caring for Pony when Pony thought, “Darry was rubbing the back of my head softly.” Darry softly rubbed the back of Pony’s head while he was in bed sick. A hero is caring and this event in the book is a clear display that Darry loves and cares for Pony. He also showed his emotional care for Pony. Darry also displayed that he cares about what happens to Pony. When he found Pony safe in the hospital, Pony thought, “Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying,” (pg. 140). Darry was concerned that Pony was hurt or worse. He was afraid it was his fault that he ran away since he hit him at their house when Pony got home late the other night.
