Over the course of the book, The Outsiders has clearly shown the theme of Heroism. In the story, we have learned that sometimes someone can be a hero when you least expect it. In the beginning this theme was seen from Darry rescuing Ponyboy from the Socs who were beating him up. We can also see this theme in the middle from when Johnny and Ponyboy saved the kids from the church fire. Lastly, we can see this theme in the end when during the rumble Ponyboy was on the ground getting punched by a Soc when Darry came up and saved him. For example, the text states, “I lay there and wondered what in the world was happening-people were jumping over me and running by me and I was too dazed to figure it out. Then someone had me under the armpits and …show more content…
From the first example, it shows the theme of Heroism because Darry saw his brother being beat up and decided to help him. This was very heroic because it was an uneven battle and Darry was being very brave to act without thinking and fight back to save Ponyboy. Also, if Darry didn’t do this who knows what would have happened to Ponyboy. From the second example, Johnny and Ponyboy risked their lives to save the kids from the flaming church. This proves a very heroic act because they put others lives before their own and risked everything to save these kids. After this they were both hospitalized and Pony came out fine but Johnny was in critical condition and died soon after. This was also very unexpected because Johnny had just killed someone and now he was saving someone’s life. In addition to this, the example from the end of the story showed how Darry once again saved Ponyboy. During the rumble Ponyboy was pinned to the ground getting punched when Darry came over grabbed the Soc and threw him off of Ponyboy. Overall, the theme of Heroism has been shown several times throughout the book, The Outsiders by S.E …show more content…
In the first example, it shows Ponyboy and Johnny both facing the reality of what really just happened. You can tell Johnny is just facing his actions because the text stated, “His voice quavered slightly.” This explains the nervous almost scared shocking in his voice after he realized what he truly just did. This also shows Pony freaking out once what Johnny did really hit him. He started panicking because the shock of what just occurred made him think about what the consequence might be and how it would affect his best friend who wasn’t a bad guy. He was just using self-defense to protect himself and Ponyboy from the Socs. Additionally, from the second example when Johnny died Pony simply could not face the reality and made himself believe a lie to help with the pain of losing Johnny. It was to much for him to see his best friend die after all those memories and years of being friends. Which proves that facing reality is extremely hard to do because Ponyboy could not face it. He forced himself to believe a lie so he would be able to go on with his life. Finally, from the last example towards the end of the book when Pony faces the truth it shows how all that emotion and lies built up inside his head to help with the sadness and it took him the whole story to be able to face all of that. This also shows how facing reality needs to be done because you will be living a lie your whole
