In The Great Gatsby and Chicago honesty is depicted as a recurring struggle to maintain. In the 1920’s people got so misled by money they lost their grasp on love, hope, happiness, and trust. People blinded themselves with things they thought were good and would make them happy, but only to later find out it was actually destroying them. In the 1920’s it was very common to lose sight of things, even if it was right under your nose. You don't notice it until it hits you like a ton of bricks. One thing that destroyed people in the Great Gatsby is love. It confused people, even when they tried ignore it. They couldn’t fully run away from it. Daisy and Gatsby had been in love, before Gatsby had to go to war and leave her. Daisy being away from Gatsby, got tired of waiting and married Tom. Gatsby lost the women he loved, Nick got so caught up with drama with everyone he knew, he ended up as unhappy as the rest. Everyone used Nick at least once, or gave him something to doubt. People used everyone and no one noticed. “If you want anything just ask for it old sport,” (Fitzgerald 48) Gatsby was trying to create a friendship with Nick, only to later on use him as bait to get closer to Daisy, who Gatsby believed loved him. But in the end nothing really comes the way he wanted, proven when Daisy admits she loved Gatsby but not the way when they were young.
